Are you getting married abroad? Here are some makeup hints and tips for you:

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Wedding makeup that will withstand heat!

I often give bridal makeup lessons for brides who are getting married abroad and want to apply their own wedding makeup.

The photographs in this post are from a beautiful wedding that I worked at in Malta last year – if anyone has been to Malta they will know how hot it is and because of this I had to make sure that I used the correct products.

If you are a bride getting married abroad and are applying your own wedding makeup, here are some hints and tips for you to help when purchasing your bridal makeup products:

Use moisturisers with a light formulation:
Don’t overload your skin with moisturisers that are too oily – by all means use an eye cream if your eyes are dry, but on the rest of your face use and oil free moisturiser. If you are in hot weather and you do start to perspire, having a moisturiser that is too oily will make your foundation ’slide’ off your skin.

After your moisturiser, apply a silicone based primer:
After you have applied your light moisturiser, it is essential to apply a primer to give your foundation something to ‘grab’ to and also to help your foundation look perfect for longer. I love silicone based primers, as not only to they give the perfect base for foundation, they also help to ‘blur’ fine lines and wrinkles which makes the skin look better, therefore you can use less foundation. (Also look for a primer with a SPF as it will protect your skin in the sun).

Do not use thick foundations – opt for a tinted moisturiser or a light coverage foundation:
Even if you like to wear a full coverage foundation on a daily basis, if you are getting married in the heat a thick foundation will slide off your skin within hours. Use a pretty, light foundation over your face and should you still be worried about any imperfections, cover them after with a long-lasting concealer.

Make sure you have the correct shade of foundation:
Before you purchase your foundation, consider what your skin tone will be on the wedding day. Will you be spending much time at the location abroad before you actually get married? If the answer is yes, then do consider if you will have more of a tan on the wedding day than you do now. If you are likely to be more tanned, please take this in to account when purchasing your foundation. By opting for a lighter foundation it will make this dilemma easier, as sheerer formulations are more forgiving and you will find that your tan will glow through the tint of the foundation/ tinted moisturiser.

Use powder to keep shine at bay:
You should use a blotting powder where needed to set your makeup and make sure that you carry a compact with you to blot away any excess shine during the day.

Use a waterproof silicone blusher:
Choose a blusher which isn’t going to melt/ slide off the skin – Daniel Sandler’s iconic Watercolour Fluid Blusher is still the best on the market.

Don’t use too much shimmer:
A little bit of shimmer is fine, but don’t overdo the sparkle in your makeup as this will look way too shiny in your wedding photographs with the bright sunlight

Use waterproof / long-lasting formulations wherever possible:
Mascaras
Eyeliners
Crease-proof eyeshadows
Lipsticks

Most importantly – keep it natural and pretty!
Remember that the makeup you would wear for a night out, is not the makeup you should be wearing for a day time, hot wedding. Bright daylight is not the most flattering light to be photographed in and if you apply your makeup too heavy, it will not look good in your photographs – especially after a few hours in the heat! Think light, pretty, fresh natural colours which will enhance a tan and will photograph well in daylight.

And if you are getting married abroad – have a wonderful wedding day!

Do you have many bridesmaids? Here are some makeup hints and tips…..

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

The above photograph is from a wedding I worked at last year in East Sussex. It was a large wedding party with seven bridesmaids and it was my job to ensure that every one of them looked beautiful and ‘complimented’ the bride, but also ensured that their makeup did not ‘compete’ with the bride.

If you have a big group of bridesmaids and you are not having a professional apply makeup for them, there are a few hints and tips that I can give you, to help your bridesmaids look beautiful on your big day.

Just as choosing a bridesmaid dress to suit different bridesmaids can be a challenge – so can choosing a makeup look for all of them! Some will wear more makeup than others on a daily basis – one or two may not wear any makeup at all and others may love a heavy look and want to look extremely glamorous on your wedding day. Many brides have spoken to me about this in the past before I have made up their bridesmaids and have expressed a concern as they are worried that one of them may want really heavy makeup and stand out more than the others – as a professional, it is my job to ensure that all of the bridesmaids look beautiful/ compliment the bride/ and all look equally stunning (whilst feeling good about themselves).

The last thing you want as a bride is a few bridesmaids with no makeup and then one or two with huge false lashes and bright red lipstick!!

My top tips for beautiful, happy bridesmaids (and a happy bride)!

I suggest to brides to buy their bridesmaids a ‘mini makeup kit’ – you could make this their present or part of their present. I recommend that this kit consist of eyes/ cheeks/ lips.

Choose neutral tones for the eyeshadows that are light and fresh and will suit all skin tones (Daniel Sandler’s Sheer Satin Shadow in Guilded Taupe or the Polychromatic Shadow in Rosy Tan are 2 that I have used for years and work for everyone). Choose a chocolate brown or a grey waterproof eyeliner pencil to compliment whichever eyeshadow you choose.

You could include a black waterproof mascara or ask them to use their own.

Then choose a light, pretty blusher and lipstick in a light pink/ peach tone (depending on your dress colour scheme).

You can’t buy as a gift a foundation for every single bridesmaid (unless you take every girl to a counter to be colour/ formulation matched), as foundation is a personal thing. As I said before, some girls will be used to a thicker foundation, some will be used to only a tinted moisturiser. So, to keep every happy and beautiful, I suggest that you ask them to apply their own foundation/ powder, but then that all of them use the colour products eyes/ cheeks / lips that you have given them.

This way, even though some of them will apply more makeup than others, at least the tones/ colours of their makeup will compliment each other and your makeup – and your will all look beautiful in the wedding photographs!

Bridal smokey eye makeup – some hints and tips

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Many brides ask me the easiest way to achieve a smokey eye look – similar to the gorgeous model in these photographs.

I always advise them that if they want a smokey eye look to first of all make sure that they are not looking to achieve what I call a ‘party smokey eye’, but that they should aim for a ‘bridal smokey eye’ which basically means a softer version. It’s fine to do a stronger eye on a night out, but remember on your wedding day you will be photographed in daylight with a light coloured dress, so anything too strong will stand out too much in the photographs and look too dark.

The main things you need to consider for a bridal smokey makeup are:

1) Your skin needs to be flawless, to avoid a ‘grubby look’, so take your time in selecting the perfect base.

2) Keep the cheeks and lips natural and soft, if you go too bright in these areas with a smokey eye, you will look too made up – almost ‘dolly like’ in your wedding day.

3) Choose long lasting products – for example, choose waterproof products wherever possible – Daniel Sandler has a great long-lasting Velvet Waterproof Pencil in various colours and for waterproof mascara, check out Estee Lauder or Clinique.

4) The most frequently asked question I am asked about smokey bridal eye makeup is what shadows you should apply and where. My top tip – invest in a palette, where all of the shades are there for you. My favourite – try the Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette is beautiful – try shade 06 Graphites or shade 04 Indigo- soft, pretty colours and the bonus – on the back of the box is a diagram of where to put each colour. Practice as much as you can, to avoid a nervous hand on the big day itself!

Daniel Sandler Spring Sunset Collection – natural, pretty tones that are perfect for brides

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Spring Sunset Collection

With an array of fresh, earthy colours new for 2012,
Daniel Sandler has created a collection that not only
offers their wearer the perfect transition from warm
winter hues to fresh sunset inspired tones but allows
them to re-create Daniel’s chosen look as the new season
sets in.

Many brides want the ‘no makeup look’ and this collection is perfect for a bride on her wedding day.

Daniel Sandler says… “My Spring Sunset colour collection
will enhance a woman’s natural beauty by using tones that
Mother Nature herself creates. These unusual yet flattering
shades haven’t been seen for ages and they’re perfect for c
reating the new “no makeup” makeup trend seen on the S/S 2012
runway at shows such as Nicole Farhi and Jaeger.”

Makeup Maestro, Daniel Sandler’s easy steps to achieve the look….

• Glide on an even coating Invisible Radiance Foundation
and Concealer £28 to create a dewy- fresh, flawless yet polished finish.

• Wash Dimensional Eye Shadow in Pale Moon £10.25 over the entire lid
and up to the brows then gently sweep Sheer Satin Eye Shadow in
Terracotta £10.25 through sockets and under lower lash line.

• Mascara needs to have a barely –there, innocent touch. My tip is to
apply one coat of Baby Jet Mascara £12.80 mainly to lash roots and not to the lash tips.

• Enhance cheeks with a delicate wash of orange infused with fine glimmers
to achieve a ‘sunlight bouncing off the sea like sparkling diamond at sunset’
effect. Shake the bottle and apply one single dot of Watercolour in Passion £14.50
onto Waterbrush £15.35 sweeping gently over cheeks.

• Make a second application for a more intense visibility.

• Finally, treat your pout to a hit of hot peach with a twist of coral pink by using
High Impact Lipstick in Coral Shell £12.80 to create a luscious full finish on lips
